Institutes for Higher Education and K-12 Educators Professional Development Grant (Exp. February 12, 2025)

Purpose

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is seeking applications to develop and implement Institutes for Higher Education Faculty or Institutes for K-12 Educators programs. Institutes are one- to four-week, residential, virtual, or combined format professional development programs that convene higher education faculty or K-12 educators from across the nation.  Participants at the Institutes deepen and enrich their understanding of significant topics in the humanities and enrich their capacity for effective scholarship and teaching.

 

Eligible Entities

The following types of organizations are eligible to apply for funding to design and carry out Institutes for either Higher Education Faculty or K-12 Educators:

  • County governments
  • Special district governments
  • State governments
  • City or township governments
  • Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
  • Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Private institutions of higher education
  • Public and State controlled institutions of higher education

 

Eligible Activities

Over a 15-month period, selected applicants will implement projects characterized by the following activities:

  • immersive study by Institute participants in topics significant to humanities, including but not limited to the following:
      • language (modern and classical) and linguistics;
      • literature, history, jurisprudence and philosophy;
      • archaeology;
      • comparative religion and ethics;
      • the history, criticism and theory of the arts;
      • aspects of the social sciences with humanistic content and methods; and
      • applications to the human environment.
  • new fields of study and/or a revitalization of existing areas of inquiry using multiple, rigorous approaches;
  • collegial dialogue;
  • teaching and learning in participants’ professional settings;
  • recent developments in the scholarship, teaching, and curricula of participants’ professional settings; and
  • intellectual and professional collaboration.

NEH has scheduled required meetings, participant application deadlines, and reporting dates, which applicants must consider when designing a project schedule and work plan.  In addition, projects must accommodate a diverse group of 25-36 full- or part-time participants drawn from across the nation.

Total Amount Awarded:  $3,000,000

Individual Award Ceiling:  $220,000

Number of Awards Expected:  18
