Military-Connected Local Education Agency Grants (Exp. April 18, 2025)

Purpose

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is charged with the responsibility and privilege of educating the children of our nation's military.  Over 1.1 million military-connected students attend public schools, making partnerships with school districts critical to military retention and successful educational outcomes.  Consequently, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 provided DoDEA the authority to share resources with public schools that educate military-connected students.  Since 2009, DoDEA has awarded 709 grants to nearly 130 school districts in 39 states, plus Washington, D.C, totaling more than $830 million.

DoDEA’s grants address either of two aspects of education for military-connected students:

  • Military-Connected Academic and Support Program (MCASP) funds promote academic continuity for highly-transient military-connected students in the community; or
  • World Language Advancement and Readiness Program (WLARP) funds establish, improve, or expand world language studies.

Eligible Entities

Independent school districts are eligible to apply for DoDEA MCASP and WLARP grants.

Eligible Activities

DoDEA seeks evidence-based, innovative projects for MCASP or WLARP that

  • support learning in areas such as literacy, math, career pathways, health and physical sciences, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) initiatives (MCASP); or
  • develop world language skills through activities such as Spanish immersion, Chinese language studies, and a greater variety of world language offerings (WLARP).

In addition, projects awarded a grant under this announcement must

  • possess the potential to be continued beyond the grant period, and
  • demonstrate approaches that could be disseminated to and duplicated in other LEAs.
