Burroughs Wellcome Fund Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) (Exp. June 11, 2024)

Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) presents the following opportunity for educational stakeholders with science, technology, engineering and math programs.

Purpose

The Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) supports diverse, out-of-school programs with a common goal:  to enable primary and secondary students to pursue inquiry-based exploration in creative, hands-on STEM activities in BWF's home state of North Carolina.

In keeping with the mission of the BWF, projects funded under SSEP must seek to attain three goals:

  • Improving student competence in science and mathematics;
  • Nurturing student enthusiasm for science and mathematics; and
  • Interesting students in careers in science-related areas.

Eligible Entities

Nonprofit organizations that are eligible to apply for SSEP awards include public and private primary, middle and secondary schools, colleges and universities, community groups, museums and zoos, and scientific organizations that can provide scientific experiential activities for K-12 students. Nonprofits offering religious programming are not eligible to apply.

Partnerships among the above organizations are welcome.

Eligible Activities

SSEP awards support out-of-school, after-school, weekend, vacation and/or summer programs for K-12 students that include the following:

  • (Required) Hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activities for K-12 students—an educational approach that BWF believes to be an effective way to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the scientific process; and
  • (Required) Alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for science and mathematics pertinent to the grade levels of the student participants (see NC Essential Standards);
  • Well-trained staff with student follow-up;
  • Career-oriented, practical and creative science enrichment activities for K-12 students with high potential, interest, or exceptional skills in STEM areas;
  • Underserved and underrepresented K-12 students;
  • Limited teacher training to enhance teachers' abilities to conduct innovative enrichment science activities for SSEP students.
