National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award Program (Opens July 9; Exp. September 9, 2026)

Purpose

This listing is a forecasted opportunity for which more information will be provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the open date (July 9, 2026).  The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative research projects with the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important areas relevant to the mission of NIH. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigator’s research program or elsewhere. Applications in any area within the biomedical sciences are welcome. The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award is a component of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research (HRHR) Program of the NIH Common Fund.

Eligible Entities

The following types of organizations are eligible to apply for the Director's Pioneer Award:

  • Independent school districts
  • Public and State controlled institutions of higher education
  • Private institutions of higher education
  • Nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status with the IRS
  • Private institutions of higher education
  • Special district governments
  • City or township governments
  • Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities
  • Native American tribal organizations (Federally recognized and other than Federally recognized tribal governments)
  • County governments
  • State governments
  • For profit organizations
  • Faith-based or Community-based Organizations;
  • Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions).
