Microplastics Research and Resource Coordination Center (Opens October 1, 2026; Exp. December 1, 2026)

Purpose

National Institutes of Health administers the Micro- and Nano- plastics (M/NPs) Research and Resource Coordination Center initiative to establish more robust coordination and advancement of multidisciplinary efforts among biomedical and material science researchers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the health effects of M/NPs.

Within NIH, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) will provide discretionary support (U24 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) to an eligible institution to launch a new coordination center to address the above-mentioned goals.

Eligible Entities

The following types of organizations are eligible to apply:

      • Independent school districts
      • Public and private institutions of higher education
      • Nonprofits with or without a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
      • Special district governments
      • City or township governments
      • County governments
      • Native American tribal governments (with or without Federal recognition)
      • Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities
      • Faith-based or Community-based Organizations
      • Regional Organizations
      • Small businesses
      • For profit organizations other than small businesses

 

Eligible Activities

A successful applicant proposal will include a coordination center with activities that carry out the following:

      • accelerate the development and dissemination of sampling and analytical standardization, data harmonization, and distribution of experimental standards across the field of M/NPs research;
      • provide leadership and guidance that fosters collaboration across the M/NPs research community; and
      • promotes best practices that enhance the reliability and validity of research findings in this area.
